Jeffrey Dean Morgan has now gone on record about his character Negan, following that cliffhanger on The Walking Dead finale. But what he has to say is quite a stark contrast from what fans are currently thinking at the moment.

When Jeffrey Dean Morgan spoke with New York Post , he went as far as to say that fans of The Walking Dead need to really see that Negan is not just some random villain that comes out of the woodwork and kills people needlessly. He even compared and contrasted Negan’s actions with that of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his summary is not so wrong, once you have a chance to think about it.

Warning: Spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 16 finale are coming. If you have not watched that episode, this article WILL spoil it for you.

Just a quick recap of why the last episode was such an intense cliffhanger for fans of The Walking Dead .

Morgan debuted as Negan on this episode and his introduction was short and to the point. With all of the Core The Walking Dead characters huddled down on their knees, presumably awaiting execution, Negan breaks off and lets them know that one of them has to die. He toys with them a bit, but is also very stern and shows no mercy with them.

Negan chooses by playing “eenie meenie miny moe” with all of them. That is when he lands on the victim he has chosen. But fans only got to see the scene from the victim’s perspective, while he/she got their brains bashed in by the baseball bat named Lucille.

But TWD fans may have Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character all wrong, at least according to him.

“Rick [Grimes] just killed 20 of Negan’s men. I feel Rick’s getting off really easy here,” Morgan told NY Post .

Morgan does make a very interesting point on his parallel with Negan and Rick. Both characters have killed their fair share of living people on The Walking Dead . But in this particular case, Negan seems to have spared the group and only killed one, and fans still do not know who it is.

“People say he’s this psychotic guy,” Morgan said. “I never looked at him like that. I think there’s a lot of similarities between him and Rick. If we had been following Negan from day one, the audience would be rooting for him.”

That also makes sense. Negan was attacked by the Core first and they also took a lot of people. But that being said, the attack was preeminent. They did so because they knew that Negan and the Saviors were going to come gunning for them at some point.

“We’re going to see Negan do some stuff in the next year that’s not going to be very nice, and I may have to approach that from a different angle,” Jeffrey Dean Morgan said. “I realize Negan is a bad guy, but he’s one of the most well-rounded villains we’re going to see on any screen in a long time. He’s got a lot of stories yet to come. It’s going to be an interesting road.”

So that last scene with Jeffrey Dean Morgan obviously is what’s going to lay the framework for what some presume to be all of Season 7 on The Walking Dead . There really does not seem to be any other way around it. A major character has died and millions will be tuning into the premiere episode of TWD next October.

As for Jeffrey Dean Morgan, he is finishing up his role on The Good Wife and that will likely be the last of that series for him, or so it seems for now.
