iPod Classics are a hot item online on sites such as eBay and Amazon this holiday season after Apple discontinued them in October, and some of the old devices are currently fetching higher prices than the current Apple iPods!
According to Metro , when Apple was selling the iPod Classic it retailed for £229, or around $360.00. Because the classic is an outdated model it would stand to reason that the prices online would drop, especially given that the main reason behind discontinuing the model was due to a shortage in parts manufactured for the device. According to a previous report by the Inquisitr , Apple CEO Tim Cook said that they simply couldn’t get the parts to manufacture the iPod Classics anymore.
“We couldn’t get the parts any more, not anywhere on Earth. It wasn’t a matter of me swinging the axe, saying ‘what can I kill today’. The engineering work was massive, and the number of people who wanted it very small. I felt there were reasonable alternatives.”
Well, instead of disappearing into oblivious, much like other outdated technology does, the Independent is reporting that the sales of iPod Classics have gone wild on sites such as Amazon and eBay. The Guardian stated that some models of the discontinued iPod Classic have sold for as much as £670, or about $1050.
So why the sudden rush to get the discontinued iPod? According to Fox News , Will Dunn of Stuff Magazine had the following to say about the obsolete technology.
“There’s still a huge affection for the iPod Classic and it’s not hard to see why – Spotify might offer 20 million songs, but 120GB of music is more than most people need, and your iTunes library doesn’t carry data charges or a subscription fee. Also, I think the Classic is a more distraction-free listening experience – I’m more likely to get through a full album on one.”
The Independent reported that collector’s editions are fetching an even higher price on Amazon and eBay.
“A set of boxed U2 iPods sold for £50,000 (around $78,446.00) on eBay in October, and another rare edition sold for £7,995 (around $12,545.00).”
While there has been a huge demand for the iPod Classics online, that doesn’t mean fans and customers haven’t been slightly disappointed with their purchases, many claiming that their items were damaged in some way or another.
