Gwyneth Paltrow is putting her acting career on the back burner. The 44-year-old Oscar-winning actress says she needs to be on hand at the headquarters of her lifestyle brand, Goop, which means she has no time for acting right now.
In an interview with the Today Show’s Matt Lauer, Paltrow revealed that Goop is her main focus right now.
“This really requires almost all of my time,” Paltrow said of Goop. “I’m in the office all day, every day. I have a pretty big team — we’re almost 85 people — so I kind of need to be at work.”
While Gwyneth said she will still try to do a little bit of acting “here and there,” her focus has most certainly shifted since her days as a movie star in the 1990s and early 2000s.
“It’s just one of those things,” Paltrow said.
“I was so lucky. I had an incredible acting career, but I had this deep passion to produce content and make great products and curate things. It sort of evolved slowly and had a long gestational period and now it’s like, a real business. I’m also the face of the brand in a lot of ways… I’m so focused on building the business and I’m sort of less focused on the ‘Gwyneth Paltrow’ part.”
Gwyneth Paltrow first launched Goop as a lifestyle newsletter for her friends in 2008. Since that time, the lifestyle letter has grown into a global brand with a skincare line, a slew of online and pop-up shops, and a recently launched health line featuring a subscription vitamin service that peddles $75-per-month supplements with names like “Why am I so Effing Tired,” “Balls in the Air” and “High School Genes.”
But amid her Goop success, Paltrow’s acting resume has taken a serious hit. Since launching Goop, the one-time A-list movie star, who won an Academy Award for her starring role in the 1998 movie Shakespeare in Love , has done a few TV cameos on shows like Nightcap and Web Therapy and very little movie work, although fans were happy to see her reprise her role as Pepper Potts in the 2012 blockbuster The Avengers . Gwyneth also won a Primetime Emmy Award for her 2011 guest role on the musical comedy Glee .
The writing has been on the wall for Paltrow’s fans for a while now. In an interview last year with Glamour, Gwyneth Paltrow said that while she’s proud of her successful acting career, she knew at some point she wanted to switch gears.
“You do look back and think, How cool that I’m Margot Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums ,” Gwyneth admitted to Glamour. “Those iconic films. [But] I wanted to create a career where I had success and freedom. Part of that freedom has been making a crazy left turn and starting a business.”
When asked if she missed acting, Paltrow had a surprising answer: “No. I wish I missed it more,” Gwyneth said.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s stance on Goop hasn’t changed much in the past year. In March 2016, Paltrow told Toda y that Goop was her “24/7 focus right now.”
“I’ll return to acting probably,” Paltrow said at the time. “But probably not right now.”
Gwyneth Paltrow hasn’t logged any acting credits for over one year, so it sounds like she really means business.
