The Groupon President’s day deal has everyone scratching their heads. Unsure if it was an attempt at humor or just really bad history, the internet is pointing their finger at Groupon . The popular online discount and coupon company offered a deal for $10 off every $40 spent in honor of the great president featured on the ten dollar bill, Alexander Hamilton.
The only problem is that Alexander Hamilton was never the president of the United States. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the U.S. and credited for establishing the country’s financial system. He aided George Washington and was instrumental in helping to shape the use of the constitution. But president he was not.
Groupon’s full press release sounds very serious and business like, but maybe it was a joke?
Beginning Saturday, Feb. 15 at 9 am CST, shoppers will be able to redeem this offer by using the promo code “10OFF40LOCAL”, which isn’t very catchy, but neither was President Hamilton’s famous saying, “nobody expects to trust his body overmuch after the age of fifty.”
President Hamilton is best known for the fiscal sensibilities that led him to author economic policies, establish a national bank and control taxes . Myfoxny.com attempted to contact Groupon and ask if the promotion was a joke or if they just goofed up. The email included a list of all 44 presidents and Hamilton was nowhere to be found on the list. Groupon spokesperson Erin Yeager wrote back, “we’ll just have to agree to disagree.”
Twitter was very confused by the deal. Some thought it was a joke, while others called out Groupon for their President’s day mix up.
