From the very beginning, Gilmore Girls creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino had a specific plan for the run of the series and that hasn’t changed with the revival of the show on Netflix. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will be presented in four 90-minute installments on Netflix, finishing off the show with an ending Amy Sherman-Palladino has envisioned, ever since Gilmore Girls premiered in 2000 on the CW network. In a new interview, Ms. Sherman-Palladino talks about sticking to that plan and about Melissa McCarthy’s much talked about return in the Gilmore Girls revival.
Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life Will End With A Four Word Phrase…Or Will It?
A Gilmore Girls event was presented at Wednesday’s Television Critics Association panel and, as Deadline reveals, the creators of Gilmore Girls and the more recent revival series, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, were among the guests. The writers were happy to answer questions about the revival of the original series, but, as Amy herself says, spoilers were not available. In fact, the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life executive producer took the opportunity to plead with fans and prolific internet users not to ruin the series, which has yet to be released, for other fans.
“It would be great if people who wanted to see the last four words first got some therapy before it aired and got rid of those inclinations,” Ms. Sherman-Palladino said.
Amy adds that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is the completion of a journey, one which began with the original run of the series.
“It’s going to mean a lot more if you’ve taken the journey, it’s going to mean a lot less if you flip to the last page first… I would hope people would want to take the whole trip.”
Even when asked with a point-blank question, neither Dan nor Amy would comment on the future of the show, other than to remark that the four Gilmore Girls revival episodes will conclude with the much-anticipated four-word sentence. Those four words, which are not revealed here, have become a mystery in themselves with link after link promising to reveal the phrase, while Gilmore Girls fans offer theory after theory about what sentence might end the show.
Meanwhile, Gilmore Girls actors aren’t giving up hope that there will be more episodes coming, beyond the four planned installments of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life .
“Who knows, it could keep going and going and going, as long as we all go to the gym and stay in shape,” offered Scott Patterson on the topic of continuing Gilmore Girls in the future.
Amy Sherman-Palladino Opens Up About The Melissa McCarthy Controversy
When the idea of bringing back Gilmore Girls through Netflix materialized, Ms. Sherman-Palladino, along with her husband and co-creator, had hoped to bring back as many original characters as possible, so, as Variety shares, the Gilmore Girls creators reached out to Melissa McCarthy, among others. The show’s executive producers were hopeful that McCarthy would, at the very least, make an appearance in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life , even though they knew Melissa had previous obligations to fill in relation to her big-screen Ghostbusters role.
“We love her; we always knew – amongst us and amongst her, we knew we were going to figure it out,” Sherman-Palladino said. “Everybody wants everybody to hate each other. It’s an age of ugliness and how do we stir up bad feelings, and it got this weird sheen on it.”
Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelai Gilmore on the series, adds that seeing Ms. McCarthy arrive on set as the shooting schedule reached its final days was like a dream come true.
“[Melissa McCarthy arrived] on one of our last days, and it was incredible,” says Graham.
Lauren adds that, had McCarthy not been able to make it, the show would have still gone on, but Graham feels it would have left a very noticeable loss to the show.
“We would’ve felt a gap in what we were trying to do. We had an incredible time and it just made it perfect — even more perfect than it already was.”
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will premiere on November 25, Friday, on Netflix.
