Way to go Trendnet, way to go.
I mean it’s great that you provide a reasonably good way for consumers to install you video camera in their homes and then monitor them from where ever they are as long as they know the IP address and the password. However what isn’t great that there is a flaw that has exposed those thousands of feeds to the public web.
Apparently the flaw in the Trendnet system was first discovered and reported on the blog Console Cowboys back in January. What is mind-numbing about the whole thing though is that by appending a specific code to the URL to the camera you could bypass the need for a password.
This of course has led to links of all kinds being posted to various web forums and the hilarity ensued with everything from offices and bedrooms to bathrooms were now view able via their supposedly secure video feeds. In fact there was a list of over 600 web addresses posted to one forum within two days of the vulnerability being exposed.
Of course Trendnet is now in the process of trying to clean up this mess as quickly as they can so if you happen to be an unlucky Trendnet customer you might want to head over to their site to see if your model is on the list .
