Following an article that Alternet said “scorches” the media two days ago by columnist Paul Krugman , the New York Times has published an extensive compilation of Donald Trump lies , told from September 15-21.
“In fact, any reporting that doesn’t accurately reflect the huge honesty gap between the candidates amounts to misleading readers, giving them a distorted picture that favors the biggest liar,” Krugman wrote in his September 23 opinion piece entitled “The Lying Game.”
In his piece, Krugman attacks what he sees as a problem with the number and scope of seeming lies, repeatedly, almost haphazardly, tossed around by Donald Trump.
How can even responsible media outlets, longing to bring the truth to readers, cram all the reported Donald Trump lies and falsehoods into one article that an average voter can comprehend? The same holds true for the 104-page financial disclosure first filed by Donald Trump mid-2015.
Describing Donald Trump’s financial disclosure as “large, hard to believe, and self-referential to the point of parody” CNBC stated a belief that the Republican nominee is an “Olympic-level narcissist.”
The New York Times examination of each of 31 Trump lies made in mid-September alone is almost breathtaking in its scope.
Among the 31 Trump lies made through the week, are many rehashed statements that media outlets have previously fact-checked and proclaimed false.
“Virtually all of Mr. Trump’s falsehoods directly bolstered a powerful and self-aggrandizing narrative depicting him as a heroic savior for a nation menaced from every direction,” writes the New York Times .
Five of the biggest lies told by Donald Trump over the week included:
- That Lester Holt, a journalist with NBC who will be serving as moderator at Monday’s Hofstra University debate, is a Democrat, when, in fact, he is a registered Republican.
- That all of the moderators for upcoming debates are Democrats, when, in fact, only Fox News ‘ Chris Wallace , who has indicated that he doesn’t feel that it is his job as a moderator to fact-check statements made by candidates, as reported by Breitbart , is a registered Democrat.
- That little media coverage has been given to Hillary Clinton’s assertion that a group of Trump supporters are “deplorable,” when, in fact, it has been widely covered.
- That he was against the Iraq War and that statements he made with Esquire , Howard Stern, and Fox News back-up his claim. The New York Times’ check of each past media appearance does not support the GOP nominee’s current statements.
- That Hillary Clinton is “effectively proposing to abolish the borders around the country,” when she has not even suggested making any changes to the budget of the U.S. Border Patrol.
Paul Krugman noted PolitiFact ‘s finding that of 255 statements made by Hillary Clinton and 258 made by Donald Trump, Clinton was deemed to have made six “Pants on Fire,” PolitiFact ‘s most scathing rating, statements, compared with Donald Trump’s 48.
The rating signifying the next-most-egregious level of dishonesty with PolitiFact is “False.” Eighty-nine of Donald Trump’s statements were graded as “False,” while only 27 of Hillary Clinton’s met this criteria.
The Inquisitr has previously reported on Donald Trump’s seemingly average investing prowess and the seemingly vast number of failed business ventures he has been involved with, as well as the fact that, when compared side-by-side, a compelling argument can be made that Hillary Clinton is a better businessperson .
It is likely that at least some of the Trump lies featured in the Times piece will be the subject of questions posed to the GOP candidate at Monday evening’s presidential debate, scheduled to run from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Hofstra University, located in Hempstead, New York. Coverage of the debate will be carried by major television networks and featured in several online live streams, as reported by Mass Live .
