The Chipotle Twitter hack attack wasn’t just stupid, lame, and boring. The Sunday hack was faked by the Chipotle company itself, according to multiple media sources on Thursday morning.
This month Chipotle has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fast food chain with a 20-day long treasure hunt. Apparently, nobody much cared. So to increase their Twitter presence, Chipotle decided to fake the Twitter hack.
Company rep Chris Arnold ‘fessed up in an interview on the fake Chipotle Twitter hack attack with Mashable:
“We thought that people would pay attention, that it would cut through people’s attention and make them talk…It was definitely thought out: We didn’t want it to be harmful or hateful or controversial.”
So instead it was just stupid, with uninteresting tweets like “Find avocado store in Arvada, Colorado” and “Hit send too soon!”
As boring as it sounded, Arnold maintained that the promotion worked. He said that they add 250 new Twitter followers on a normal day but 4,000 new followers on the day after the fake attack.
OK, whatever. But if I was Chipotle’s Twitter team, I wouldn’t quit my day job just yet.
Their approximately 230,000 Twitter followers won’t be a threat to Justin Bieber’s 42 million any time soon.
Next time they want to pick up junk followers, maybe Chipotle should just buy some rural peasants in China like everybody else.

As you can see, it was all pretty juvenile. I say they owe us all a beer for putting up with the fake Chipotle Twitter attack.
