The Cars movies have all focused on strong male leads. Similar to the sport of racing which has long been male dominated, though challenged by the likes of Danika Patrick and Chrissy Wallace. The movie is considered to be one of the best in the franchise and inspires a wave of emotion.

Lightening McQueen, is still the highlight of the story, but this time he is joined by a new car, Cruz Ramirez, voiced by Cristela Alonzo. The female character is supposed to train the aging McQueen. It is revealed that Cruz had laid down her passion for racing competitively because as a girl she couldn’t compete with the men.

The story unfolds as Brian Fee, the movie’s director, takes notes from his young daughters. At a time when girls put down their interests because they are “boy” things, the father wants to highlight that women are capable of anything .

“Now that I have two daughters, I see the world through their eyes. I see how little they have, and I see what they’re up against. I see how they hold themselves back.”

The director previously focused on what he knew, the strong male character. This time he is taking inspiration from his young girls, Lucia, 11, and Eleanor, 8. In a culture that draws a line between the capabilities of men and women, Pixar is narrowing the gap, and leading the conversation. Girls are strong and able to pursue their dreams, no matter what boundary that ambition crosses.

As the women’s movement gains strength and begins to inspire a generation, films are beginning to highlight the female lead. The aim with the latest Cars movie is to let our children know that they can do anything. It’s opening doors and motivating the younger generation to follow their hearts.

The movie follows Lightening McQueen who is voiced by Owen Wilson, as he tries to improve his ability in the midst of a more innovative group of racers who dominate with their cutting edge technology. The film encourages viewers to recognize when it’s their turn to inspire and train another to take their place. The well rounded motion picture will stand out to both children and adults as it looks at the full circle of life and moves them to see both the value and wisdom in others.
