Boulder, CO — Does driving to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting when you’re already drunk sound like a good idea for anyone?
A 73-year-old alleged drunk motorist behind the wheel of an SUV hit a pedestrian on Wednesday afternoon after clipping a food truck and then crashed into a church where she was to attend an AA meeting.
Police identified the suspect in the accident as Brenda Geers. According to the CBS Denver affiliate , “Officers said she first collided with a food truck in the parking lot and then hit Eric Anderson at a table, then smashed into the church.” Anderson, 18, a University of Colorado student, was apparently thrown about 30 feet. He is in fair condition at a local hospital with with a punctured lung and broken ribs, but is expected to be okay.
There were about 20 people in the vicinity of the food truck at the time outside of St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church. According to the food truck owner, “Saw an SUV cross the front of the windshield and take out the table right behind me. He ended up wrapped up with the car right around the railing and by that tree.” He also said the truck “shook like an earthquake” owing to the impact of the crash.
Geers, who apparently failed a sobriety test, faces DUI and vehicular assault charges. She was not injured in the crash but is being held on a $,5000 bond in Boulder County Jail.
