Top ABC News editor Don Ennis has come out as a transgender woman .
The New York Post reports that Ennis debuted her new persona on Friday, wearing a “little black dress,” a brunette wig, and asking colleagues to call her “Dawn” from now on.
On his Facebook page, the 49-year-old father of three explained his decision to come out as transgender, which she said she has struggled with quietly for seven years.
“Please understand: This is not a game of dress-up, or make-believe. It is my affirmation of who I now am and what I must do to be happy, in response to a soul-crushing secret that my wife and I have been dealing with for more than seven years, mostly in secret.”
She says that she suffers from an “unusual hormonal imbalance” and has been undergoing hormone-replacement therapy to maintain “mysteriously a more female than male body.”
Ennis and her wife, Wendy, have chosen to end their 17-year marriage as well.
“Despite the heartbreak, [Wendy] has encouraged me to start this new life that we both believe better fits who I now am,” Ennis wrote. “Trust me, this is NOT the midlife crisis I was counting on — I’d much prefer to have bought a sports car.”
So far, her co-workers have supported her coming out. Some left flowers on her desk while ABC News President Ben Sherwood wrote her a supportive note, reports NY Mag .
“I’m overwhelmed by the strong support I’ve received from my coworkers, and I’m looking forward to telling my story when I’m ready,” Ennis wrote.
Rumor has it, telling that story will involve a book deal.
