When Ryan Challinor plays music, he does so with all of his heart. Literally. In a new video posted to YouTube, Challinor hacked a heart monitor and used it to play Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.”
Challinor hooked the heart monitor up to his own chest by syncing a GPS watch heart monitor to the system wirelessly. The hack was actually quite elaborate and included duct-taping a USB webcam to his project so it could receive information and determine the tempo of the song. The actual tempo is controlled by the music programming software Max/MSP.
Ryan writers:
“Heart Beats continually modifies the tempo of your music to match your heart rate … Hopefully this won’t result in a positive feedback system that gives the user a heart attack.”
To reach his ultimate goal Challinor started up the song and then performed jumping jacks to control the tempo for Call Me Maybe .
Honestly, I don’t get the complete obsession with this song, but hearing it hacked into warbly sounds and sped up Chipmunks type tempos did put a smile on my face.
This is the only song Ryan Challinor has hacked apart so far, but, given his 144,361 pageviews since uploading the video to YouTube on November 11, there is a good chance we will see more of his handy work in the future.
