Barnes & Noble has today launched the much rumored Nook Color, a 7 inch eBook reader based on Google’s Android operating system.

Pitched as a high end version of the original Nook (which remains on sale), the Nook Color has access to the same content as the original Nook, but also offers full-color magazines, available on a 14 day free trial basis

To accompany the launch, Barnes & Noble has also launched Nook Kids, a children’s ebook store, which as well as offering children’s book can also read the books out for your children.

Being an Android based reader, the Nook Color offers a range of apps, including Facebook and Twitter Integration, and a web browser. Other apps include Pandora and Lonely Planet, however there is no access (at least at this stage) to the Android Marketplace, so you’re stuck with specific Nook Color apps, at least until someone finds a way of hacking the device.

The Nook Color costs $249, and will ship from November 19, although it is available on pre-order now. The device will also be available for purchase at Best Buy, Walmart, and Barnes & Noble retail stores.
