Congratulations blobfish, you’re officially the world’s ugliest animal.
The Ugly Animal Preservation Society held a contest last month to decide once and for all which animal was the ugliest in the world. The contest was full of stiff competition from animals like the pig-nosed turtle, the Titicaca ‘scrotum’ water frog, and the flightless dung beetle, but no one could out ugly the blobfish.
The Ugly Animal Preservation Society works to raise awareness for animals that are often forgotten by the mainstream media. People like to donate money to help dolphins and koala bears but no one really cares about the blobfish.
Simon Watt, the society’s president , said: “We’ve needed an ugly face for endangered animals for a long time and I’ve been amazed by the public’s reaction. For too long the cute and fluffy animals have taken the limelight, but now the blobfish will be a voice for the mingers who always get forgotten.”
The UAPS held a comedy night earlier this month and also posted several videos on YouTube. They then asked ugly animal fans around the world to vote for the ugliest creature on earth. The blobfish easily won the title with more than 10,000 votes.
The ugly creature lives off the coast of Australia on the bottom of the ocean. It is often killed after accidentally getting caught in trawling fishing nets.
