Albert Pujols has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after he tore the already aggravated plantar fascia ligament in his left foot.
The injury is expected to sideline Pujols for at least several weeks. Depending on the severity of the tear and doctor orders, the Angles slugger could be done for the remainder of the MLB season.
Replacing Albert Pujols will be outfielder Kole Calhoun, who was called up from triple-A Salt Lake. Calhoun has been hitting.354 with 12 homers and 49 RBIs in 59 games.
Pujols has been suffering through the season because of plantar fasciitis. The slugger aggravated the injury during a ninth-inning, two-run single against the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.
The fate of the slugger wasn’t known until he returned to South California for an MRI on Saturday afternoon. Pujols also had the injury examined by a doctor.
The Angels have not yet revealed how they plan to treat Albert Pujols for his foot injury. There is the possibility that Pujols may undergo surgery to cut the ligament. By cutting, doctors are able to release tension and relieve inflammation. Health professionals could also provide Pujols with a cortisone shot that would allow him to possibly continue playing through the end of the season.
Ending his season and undergoing surgery might be Pujols’ best option. The slugger was relegated to designated hitter in 65 of 99 starts because of his aggravated foot.
Pujols is.258 with 17 home runs and 64 runs this season. In his eight games since the All-Star break the Angles slugger is 12 for 34 (.353) with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Albert Pujols is only 2-years into his 10-year, $240-million contract.
