Miley Cyrus has just revealed that her first relationship was with “a chick,” according to Time magazine. The 23-year-old “We Can’t Stop” singer also shared what it was like coming out to her parents .

In her recent interview with Variety , Miley Cyrus revealed what it was like exploring her sexuality back when she was in school. But no matter how hard it was to understand her own gender and sexuality, Cyrus said she never allowed anyone to put her identity in a box.

Miley Cyrus also revealed that she has always hated the word “bisexual” because it’s putting her “in a box.” In fact, the “Wrecking Ball” singer went as far as saying that she doesn’t even identify people as boy and girl.

“I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl.”

And since Miley Cyrus’ first love interest was a female, it was particularly challenging for her to come out to her religious Southern family.

“My first relationship in my life was with a chick.”

And when her parents criticized her for her sexuality, Miley Cyrus, who says the universe has always given her “the power to know I’ll be OK,” knew that one day they would understand her struggles.

Miley Cyrus also said that she thinks a “P” should be added to the LGBTQIA+ spectrum because she identifies herself as a “pansexual.” The “We Can’t Stop” singer said she never loved being a girl and being a boy never sounded like “fun” to her, so she realized her gender was unassigned, and that helped her to understand her pansexuality.

“Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more. I was like, ‘Oh — that’s why I don’t feel straight and I don’t feel gay. It’s because I’m not’.”

Miley Cyrus is no stranger to being rumored to be dating females. In mid-2015, the singer was rumored to be romantically linked with model Stella Maxwell after Cyrus shared an Instagram snap of her and Maxwell kissing, according to the Daily Mail .

Miley Cyrus also added that she identified herself as pansexual and gender unassigned after visiting an LGBTQIA+ center in Los Angeles. The singer said she saw “one human in particular” who didn’t identify as either male or female.

Without elaborating who that “human” was, Miley Cyrus that that human was beautiful, sexy, tough, vulnerable, feminine, and masculine – a mix of everything.

“And I related to that person more than I related to anyone in my life.”

Miley Cyrus has her own foundation, Happy Hippie, which sees its mission to help homeless people and young people from the LGBTQ community.

The singer also recalled a poignant moment from The Voice .

“On The Voice , this young girl started crying when she left, because I’m the reason she came out.”

And Miley Cyrus is very thankful to that girl because her mom started crying when she heard the girl say that. Cyrus’s mom even apologized for the way she reacted when the singer came out to her.

“She never understood me until she saw that girl who couldn’t be herself. It was very cool.”

Miley Cyrus joins Laverne Cox, Scarlett Johansson, Helen Mirren, and Ava DuVernay to be featured in Variety ‘s exclusive Power of Women issues.

Miley Cyrus also revealed that she has a problem with the CBS drama Supergirl . The “Wrecking Ball” singer explained that it’s “weird” to have a show with a gender attached to it.

“One, it’s a woman on that f***ing billboard – it’s not a little girl. Two, what if you’re a little boy who wants to be a girl so bad that this makes you feel bad?”
