GitHub’s collaborative platform is now home to more than 3 million developers. The company announced this week at its winter summit that it recently passed the massive 3 million developers milestone.
GitHub launched in April 2008 but didn’t reach out to one million developers until September 2011. In August 2012, the company reached 3 million developers and then spent the next 12 months building an even bigger developer base.
According to the company’s blog it expected to witness its 5 millionth repository in the next several weeks.
To celebrate its major milestone, GitHub will host a party this Thursday at Code Bass in San Francisco.
It has been a good 12 months for GitHub. In summer 2012, the company announced a $100 million funding round from Andreessen Horowitz , money that is being used to pursue the company’s enterprise strategy, which includes an on-premise version of its technology.
The3 million developer mark showcases the shift in programming ideologies from one of a closed environment to that of a more open and robust ecosystem for app and hardware developers.
As more developers engage in the startup culture, platforms such as GitHub will continue to lead the way towards more robust and collaborative projects.
Github sure has come a long way since Linus Torvalds orginally developed the platform for Linux Kernel Development.
