A dog attacked a 10-year-old boy inside a family home in Michigan this week. The child remains in the hospital, recovering from severe injuries after the violent incident.

According to WXYZ 7 News , a boy in Washtenaw County was mauled on Wednesday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. by a dog that one neighbor says “seemed to love the kid.”

Investigators reveal that the boy was at home alone on Stony Creek Road in Augusta Township when the pit bull attacked him. He was able to run to neighbors for help.

Neighbor Melody Rittenhouse said the boy was covered in blood. She called 911 and got neighbors over promptly. She described it as “a bad situation. A very sad day.”

An off-duty Northfield Township firefighter tried to keep the boy calm until emergency responders arrived.

Neighbors were reportedly traumatized by the event and were shocked the dog attacked the boy because they would frequently see the animal outside with the family all day.

“Never would have expected it. It seemed like the dog loved the kid,” said neighbor Steven Shay.

The dog has been transferred to animal control, where it will be decided whether to euthanize the pit bull.

CBS Detroit reports that the boy was in unstable condition at the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital, but it is unknown what his current condition is. A spokesperson for Huron Valley Ambulance said when emergency crews arrived at the scene, the dog had already been contained and that the boy had broken bones in his arm and wounds to the face.

Police are still investigating the dog attack.

Several dog attacks on children inside family homes have unraveled in the last few weeks. As the Inquisitr recently reported, a 3-day-old newborn was attacked by two family dogs inside a California home. The baby girl’s mother had left the door open because it was hot outside, unaware that the dogs were not tied up in the backyard as she believed. Both attacked and killed the infant. One dog was described as a shar-pei mix, and the other was a pit bull. The owner surrendered the dogs to the Central California Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and they were euthanized.

On Tuesday, two teens in Waterloo, Iowa, were attacked by a 9-month-old pit bull after it escaped from its home. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that the dog’s owner was cited for dog at large and dog causing injury.

Officer Ryan Doland with the Waterloo Animal Control said the dog, named Remy, is currently undergoing quarantine because he was not up-to-date on his shots. Doland said authorities have never had any issues with the young dog in the past, so he will be returned home at the end of the quarantine period. The owner must pay impound and quarantine fees after the dog receives the necessary immunizations.

The dog attacked two 13-year-old boys. Waterloo police say they suffered minor injuries. One of the kids was taken to the hospital for a bite that broke the skin, but the other boy’s injury was not as severe.

Remy lives around the corner from where he attacked the two teenagers. He managed to escape his home when the owners were not there. Doland said the other two dogs at the residence did not escape.

A number of dog attacks on children have made news over the months. Reasons for the attacks are not commonly revealed since events leading up to the maulings are rarely witnessed.
