Mazzy Star’s “California” is out, the first single from the upcoming new album Seasons Of Your Day . The alternative group had previously released “Common Burn” in 2011, which will also appear on the long-rumored album now scheduled to be released on September 24.
The group is best known to most people for the 1994 single “Fade Into You.” In 2011, they released another single, “Common Burn,” which will also reportedly appear on the new album — but Mazzy Star’s “California” is considered the official first release off of Seasons Of Your Day.
They toured in 2012 and are expected to tour again this fall in North America and Europe. Their Twitter presence isn’t huge, but you can follow Mazzy Star’s official Facebook page to keep up on what they’re doing.
You can click that button and listen to the “California” for yourself. At the time of writing, the song had just appeared and didn’t have that many YouTube hits yet, so why not be among the first?
Spin’s Marc Hogan said that it reminded him of Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California.” I don’t hear it but maybe that’s why they pay him the big bucks. Mazzy Star is calling it “music for lovers, music for broken hearts,” and in my humble opinion it’s about what you’d expect from a description like that.
So far, mostly fans have found the single. Here’s a round-up of some of the early listener reaction:
CeCe Santa on Facebook: “I LOVE the new song California…Jesus has it been 20 years.”
Amanda Otto on Facebook: “i’ve been waiting…you are an inspiration to so many. xoxox.”
Ian Tulud on YouTube: “Even the artwork still looks like from the 90s.”
Cugamer on YouTube: “Like seeing an old friend again. And Hope’s voice has not dimmed a bit.”
Chris Lawrence on YouTube: “thank you god for listening to my prayers…lol.”
While I think the Spin Led Zeppelin comparison was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, the fans seem to be excited about Mazzy Star’s “California.”
