Text Messaging On The Decline, According To New Report

A new study from a technology and strategy consulting firm shows that Americans are starting to use text messing less on their cellphones.

The consulting firm Chetan Sharma reports that the “total number of messages as well as the total messaging revenue” dropped for the first time in the US market.

The firm said that it may be too early to say if the amount of text messaging will continue to decline or if this was just a temporary dip.

Chetan Sharma writes:

“In Q3 2012, for the first time, there was a decline in both the total number of messages as well as the total messaging revenue in the market. It might be early to say if the decline has begun or the market segment will sputter along before the decline takes place.”

The firm also noted that the data doesn’t mean that people are communicating less. Cellphone users may just be using Facebook, Twitter, or iMessage to communicate with texts. The data does suggest, however, that the amount of text messages sent in the United States has peaked.

MSNBC reports that, in the second quarter of the year, the average texter sent 696 messages per month. This quarter that number has dropped to 678.

Do you still send text messages? Do you prefer to communicate with your friends through Facebook or iMessage?
