GoDaddy service is fully restored and according to the registrar service yesterday’s outage that took GoDaddy down was not the result of hackers.
Following the restoration of service GoDaddy is claiming that the hacker group Anonymous was not responsible for Monday’s services. The registrar is also claiming that other external influences did not play a part in the outage.
According to interim CEO Scott Wagner:
Yesterday, GoDaddy.com and many of our customers experienced intermittent service outages starting shortly after 10 a.m. PDT. Service was fully restored by 4 p.m. PDT.
Early reports pointed to a possible denial of service attack (DDoS) as the cause of the outage which effected websites and email addresses.
Wagner continues in his statement:
“The service outage was not caused by external influences. It was not a “hack” and it was not a denial of service attack (DDoS). We have determined the service outage was due to a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables. Once the issues were identified, we took corrective actions to restore services for our customers and GoDaddy.com. We have implemented measures to prevent this from occurring again.”
GoDaddy also claims that the service interruption did not lead to customer data theft.
In defending his company’s policies Scott Wagner wrote:
“Throughout our history, we have provided 99.999% uptime in our DNS infrastructure. This is the level our customers expect from us and the level we expect of ourselves. We have let our customers down and we know it.”
While Wagner thanked GoDaddy customers for their continued support the truth of the matter is that GoDaddy customers were furious over the outage, taking to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networks en masse to vent their frustrations. Small business owners who rely on GoDaddy services to make a living were the most livid voices on the internet.
Anonymous has not responded to GoDaddy claims that the service was taken down by internal mishaps.
On a personal note I would much rather have known that a DDoS attack took down GoDaddy service in place of the company’s own incompetence.
