Brandon Roy is thinking about retirement after the Minnesota Timberwolves guard could not stop the chronic pain in his knee with a last-resort arthroscopic surgery.
Roy has already retired once, but this time, if he chooses to hang up his jersey again, it would likely be for good. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Roy’s right knee is still in constant pain, robbing him of the jump shot that made him one of the best shooters in the NBA.
A three-time All-Star, Brandon Roy had his first retirement before last season as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. But over the summer, he underwent platelet-rich plasma therapy that helped him feel good enough to try a comeback. Though many teams wanted his services, Roy chose the Timberwolves and looked good in training camp.
Roy re-injured the knee during a preseason game and has not recovered properly since then. He had surgery in November and returned to practice this week, going so far as to talk about a return against the Suns on Saturday. Sources close to the team told Yahoo! Sports that Roy would likely never become a productive NBA player again, however.
It appeared that Brandon Roy would retire this week, as the Timberwolves set up for a press conference in their media room, but it was later taken down without explanation.
“We’re hoping for the best and preparing for the worst, meaning I think the team has to prepare as if it may not work, and do what’s necessary,” said Timberwolves president David Kahn. “Having said that … I’m rooting for him, and am hopeful it will work, but we have to proceed as it may not and thus have to be very open in what we do.”
