So what do you do when you’re no longer played on top 40 radio? Well, if you’re Alice Cooper then you’re lambasting folk groups who are coming up in the world of rock music and are currently climbing the charts.
Although you can’t compare Alice Cooper and his legendary career with Mumford & Sons, and The Lumineers, Cooper spoke honestly about the two bands during a Fuse interview.
Alluding to the lack of hard rock out there, Cooper said:
“I just feel like this whole generation maybe all need to eat a steak. Maybe they need to quit eating, you know, vegetarian food and get out there and get some blood pumping in their system.”
Cooper went on to say that “Rock isn’t happy, happy, happy.” That’s when the rocker turned to the current groups of today to make his point, while simultaneously mocking fan favorites like The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons.
Cooper said:
“We’re The Lumineers, let’s clog dance! Hey there’s a place for that. If I wanted to go see a great clog dancing band, then I would go see The Lumineers.”
From there Cooper went on to mention Mumford & Sons, targeting the folk band and their popularity. Cooper said of the popular band, which is fronted by Marcus Mumford:
“Mumford & Sons are great at what they do, but it’s not rock and roll. That’s an offense to rock and roll. I guess if they want to be folk rock. I guess they want to look like everybody else. I guess I’m old school that when you’re in a band, you’re an outlaw. You don’t play by those rules.”
Alice Cooper has been a rock singer for over six decades, and is notable for pioneering the theatrical brand of shock rock. One of his most well known songs is “School’s Out” which was a huge hit in 1972, and appears regularly in films. In 2011 the original Alice Cooper band was inducted into the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
