The unlocked iPhone 5 is now available via the US Apple online store. The GSM-only version of the popular smartphone can be used on GSM carriers throughout the world, but the lack of a contract comes with hefty fees.

Buyers can pick up the unlocked iPhone starting at $649 (16GB). Also available is a 32GB model for $749 and a 64GB model for $849.

Apple delayed the release of its unlocked iPhone 5 devices to allow for carrier sales support. The hiatus of the unlocked iPhone 5 lasted for just nine weeks from the time of initial launch.

Apple Stores are expected to have stock of the unlocked phones on Friday, and the devices will still be limited to just two smartphones per customer.

In the United States, the iPhone 5 GSM-version is compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile along with various regional carriers. The phone will not work on Verizon and Sprint Wireless networks, which feature the CDMA protocol. Verizon iPhone 5 devices, however, are already GSM unlocked for worldwide use, a big advantage the network has carried over its competitors.

Apple has not yet announced when carriers and other retailers will receive unlocked iPhone 5 smartphones.

Outside of being unlocked, the new unlocked iPhone devices feature the same technologies of their carrier locked counterparts including Siri, 4G LTE data connectivity, and the company’s popular Retina display.

Will you be paying a premium price of $450 per device in order to receive a fully unlocked Apple iPhone 5, or is a discounted device with a two-year contract worth the possible hassle you might experience down the road?
