Sprint Wireless on Monday announced plans to roll out 4G LTE service to more than 100 new cities in the next few months.
Sprint began testing 4G LTE in 15 cities in July 2012, promising at that time to roll out the program nationwide in a timely fashion. Cities that will now receive the 4G LTE platform include Chicago, Boston, New York City and Los Angeles. Smaller cities such as Rockford, Illinois and Salisbury, Maryland will also receive 4G LTE connectivity during the roll out stage.
Sprint Wireless users will now have access to technology that is nearly 10 times faster than their current 3G Sprint Wireless connections.
To build out its new 4G LTE network Sprint had to adapt and build new relay towers to help deliver the faster network and to avoid mobile network congestion.
According to Sprint:
“During the pre-launch phase, customers with capable 4G LTE devices may begin to see 4G LTE coverage in these areas and are welcome to use the network even before it officially launches. Sprint plans to announce commercial availability of 4G LTE in these cities in the coming months, at which point we expect coverage, performance and reliability to get even better.”
In areas where 4G LTE is not yet available Sprint Wireless has already begun to overhaul 3G connectivity, improving signal strength and in-building coverage.
In a statement regarding the company’s attempt to strengthen its network Bob Azzi, senior vice president of network at Sprint said:
“We know our customers depend on their mobile devices as their primary source of communication, business connectivity and entertainment. We want to deliver a network that delivers mobile access, productivity and entertainment at a highly competitive price point.”
