A new Ford concept pickup was unveiled today in Detroit. The Ford Atlas Concept won’t be heading to the market anytime soon but it does show the direction that Ford will be heading in the future.

Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development, said:

“The Ford Atlas Concept previews the innovations that will transform what people expect from their pickup. With 36 years as America’s best-selling pickup, we are absolutely committed to setting the agenda in the truck market.”

Ford said that it’s new concept pickup was inspired by “decades of listening to customers.” The result is a pickup truck that has a wider stance and more prominent wheel arches. The Ford Atlas Pickup also has multiple tie-down points, an integrated cargo box, a 110-volt electrical outlet and an extendable (and hidden) ramp.

J Mays, Ford group vice president and chief creative officer, said:

“We wanted the concept to reflect how Ford trucks help customers in both their worlds – professionally and personally. Every surface and feature in the vehicle has been crafted for purpose and capability while retaining an unmistakable Built Ford Tough look.”

The Ford Atlas Concept also features Ford’s next-generation EcoBoost powertrain which improves fuel-economy and reduces CO2 emissions.

The Ford concept pickup also includes active grill shutters, a dual-purpose tailgate step, a trailer backup assist, a 360-degree point-of-view camera and a bunch of LED lights.

Ford hasn’t said when the new car will go on the market but Yahoo News predicts that it will be 2015 at the earliest.

What do you think of Ford’s new concept pickup?
