Social networking website MySpace has relaunched with a new look and a focus on music discovery. In July 2012, the social network, with the help of investor Justin Timberlake, began a closed beta test of its new system. On Tuesday, the social network officially rolled back the curtain on its new sleek interface.
While some users have been able to join the program via user invitations, the network had remained largely cordoned off until this time.
To access the new MySpace, users can type in their old MySpace login details (username/password) or they can connect via Twitter or Facebook accounts.
While the old MySpace was largely known for its music discovery options, the new MySpace takes that music focus to an entirely new level, allowing for easy discover of artists and tracks. Users can also connect with individual artists as they see fit.
In October 2011, the new Myspace was called the “Hulu of Music,” and its new interface appears to be keeping with that claim made by Specific Media.
Streaming music has become a huge money maker for the likes of Spotify and Pandora. However, social music programs have yet to take off. Case in point Apple’s Ping service, which was shuttered after less than a year in service.
The new MySpace does have one advantage: Justin Timberlake’s new single “Suit & Tie” is played for users who sign-in to the service for the first time. “Suit & Tie” is a Jay-Z collaborated track and the first song off Timberlake’s first album in seven years.
