Darrelle Revis has been given permission to talk to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the days seem numbered for the Pro Bowl cornerback to remain a member of the New York Jets.
Still working on rehab from a torn ACL, Revis has been given written permission to negotiate a contract with the Bucs, sources in the league told ESPN . A blockbuster trade is reportedly in the works that would send the Bucs first-round pick to the Jets.
If true, this would give the Jets the No. 13 pick in addition to the No. 9, giving the team a chance to pick up two players with an immediate impact on the roster.
The development seems to imply that a trade is imminent, or else the Jets likely wouldn’t have granted permission for Revis to talk to the Bucs. This is a turnaround from reports earlier in the week that talks between the Jets and Bucs had cooled.
As the Jets opened up voluntary workouts last week, the team called in Revis to get a look at the cornerback for the first time since his surgery in October. Revis had an MRI that was evaluated by a team doctor, who gave a more detailed rehab schedule to the cornerback.
The camp also brought a bit of conflict between Revis and the team. The cornerback asked to be excused from the first two weeks of the offseason program, but the team denied the request. Revis did eventually show up, earning a $1 million workout bonus tied to his participation in the workouts.
There have also been several rumors around the potential Darrelle Revis trade. The Jets reportedly looked at shipping Tim Tebow to Tampa as part of the trade, mainly as a way to prevent rival New England from picking up the quarterback and avoid having to cut him and getting nothing in return.
