Carl Conyers, the youngest son of longtime U.S. Representative John Conyers (D-Mich.), has been reported missing, according to several news reports on Thursday.

According to CBS’ Detroit affiliate WWJ, Carl’s roommate had last seen him on Tuesday afternoon in South Central Houston. Conyers’ Twitter account was also active as of Wednesday morning, and that gave his girlfriend, Daisha Lewis, some hope that he may have turned up. But with no sign of the young man, Carl Conyers was reported missing later that Wednesday.

“Right now, we still don’t know where he is. He may have come back to his room around 11:30 yesterday, in the morning, but as far as we know, no one has seen him since then,” Lewis said in an interview with WWJ. “He might have come back to take more stuff out of his room, but we’re not sure if it was him that took stuff out of his room or someone else that made him or someone that did it for him.”

Lewis also told WWJ about the details of Conyers’ Twitter post on Wednesday, asking her to meet him at the University of Houston campus, where he is currently studying. That was where she and her friends made some worrying discoveries, as Carl’s room was uncharacteristically messy.

“When we got there — I didn’t feel right about it or thought maybe he was lying or someone was making him lie to meet us there because when we got there, he wasn’t there. When we got back to the apartment, his stuff was gone. He took his ID with him and a debit card and some clothes even. Like it was a distraction to get more stuff that he left behind.”

A report from the Houston Chronicle suggests that Carl Conyers, before he went missing, was acting a bit strangely . The publication cited Conyers’ roommate Chet Ball, who said Carl was “pulling his shirt over his face” while cooking dinner at their apartment.

Another one of Conyers’ friends, Corey Gentry, said that Carl was usually a “very logical and rational” person, due to his hailing from Detroit and not being familiar with Houston. Gentry added that Conyers is active on campus as the president of the University of Houston’s Black Business Students Association and as a member of the arts group Uncommon Colors.

The Houston Police Department announced on Thursday that the FBI and Secret Service are now helping out in the search for Carl Conyers. According to Texas Equusearch coordinator Frank Black, there are also about 600 Houston residents “on standby” to assist in the search and go through some parts of the city.

Meanwhile, John Conyers released a statement to the Detroit News , confirming that the FBI is indeed involved in the search for his son.

“I’m very worried. It’s very unlike him. He’s a very stable young guy.”

The Houston Chronicle further quoted Conyers’ roommate Bell, who doesn’t believe that Carl was targeted due to the fact his father serves in Congress. Instead, he thinks his friend disappeared because he was concerned the key to his off-campus residence was missing, with his room door locked and all his valuables left in the house.

Carl Conyers’ missing persons flyer describes the youth as a 21-year-old African-American male standing six-foot-tall and weighing about 145 pounds, with black hair, a light-brown complexion, and brown eyes. Photos released by police show him sporting a beard, although the HPD said he had since shaved it off.

Those with information on Carl Conyers’ whereabouts can call the Houston Police Department at 713-884-3131 or the Houston Police Missing Persons Division at 832-394-1840.
