Fresh off the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union, talks of Texas secession have started back up in the Lone Star State. Throughout its history, Texas has been one of the only states where it appears that secession from the United States is constantly discussed. Daniel Miller, the president of the Texas Nationalist Movement, commented about Texas and secession from the union.
“From the looks of it, the British people have chosen to take control of their political and economic destiny. The forces of fear have lost. It is now important for Texas to look to ?Brexit as an inspiration and an example that Texans can also take control of our destiny. It is time for Texans to rally with us and fight for the right to become a self-governing nation.”
The Texas Nationalist Movement considers itself to be the “largest independence movement in the United States.” The most recent secession talks happened during this past May at the Texas Republican Convention. The movement was halted at the convention when the group was unable to acquire enough votes to get a secession referendum.

At one point in time, talk of a Texas secession spurred a case that went to the Supreme Court.
In Texas v. White , the question as to whether a Texas secession was unconstitutional was the focal point of the case. An excerpt from the verdict is found below.
“When Texas became one of the United States, she entered into an indissoluble relation. The union between Texas and the other States was as complete, as perpetual, and as indissoluble as the union between the original States. There was no place for reconsideration or revocation, except through revolution or through consent of the States.”
Secession from the United States is not an easy task to accomplish. Historians of the Civil War can tell you that. Citizens of Texas feel that they have everything within their own state that any other nation in the world has. Pro Texit citizens also feel that they can do a better job at governing themselves than having to follow the edicts handed down by the federal government.
Even though a new secession movement is brewing in the Lone Star State, Donald Trump believes that Texas will never leave the United States. Trump’s reasoning for his statement is that “Texas loves me.”
Texas was its own nation at one point in history. Originally part of Mexico, Texas gained its independence in 1836. The Lone Star State would be an independent nation until it joined the United States nine years later in 1845.
Animosity against the United States government appears to be growing with each passing day. With a very heated, and historic, political season upon us, is it possible that this Texas secession movement may finally get enough traction to leave the United States?
