Mirza Teletovic may or may not have set a NBA record last night when he airballed three shots in 40 seconds during the fourth quarter.
Teletovic is a bench player for the Brooklyn Nets who played the Detroit Pistons last night. Originally from Bosnia, Teltovic signed a three-year, $9 million deal with the Nets last July. He is averaging about 3.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game for Brooklyn in the 2013 season.
Pistons play-by-play man George Blaha (see/hear video below) suggested Teletovic’s three airballs at the Palace of Auburn Hills has to be an NBA record but apparently no stats are kept on such things.
After the third failed jumper, head coach P.J. Carlesimo yanked Teletovic, 27, from the game in favor of Gerald Wallace.
Sports Illustrated observes that Teletovic didn’t exactly set the world on fire in the Nets-Pistons contest even though the Nets managed to win the game 93-90:
“Those three airballs were the entirety of Teletovic’s statistical output. He finished with zero points, zero rebounds, zero assists, zero steals, zero blocks, zero fouls and three airballs on three attempts in four minutes. Amazing.”
The Nets 6? 9? power forward is to some extent in good company. The Bleacher Report notes that Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers missed the rim four times in May 1997 during a playoff game against the Utah Jazz.
