The Samsung Galaxy S8, released in 2017, could be quite the smartphone. Bloomberg has the news.

“Samsung Electronics Co. is considering introducing two new smartphone models that will feature bendable screens, including a version that folds in half like a cosmetic compact, people familiar with the matter said. The devices using organic light-emitting diodes could be unveiled as soon as early 2017, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private.”

The article adds that there will be a second Samsung model that will have a five-inch screen when used as a handset. However, it unfolds into a display that’s as large as eight inches, similar to a tablet, the article said.

Commenters after a similar article on Engadget are excited.

“I like the idea. As long as it’s not too thick and I can still use it folded up just like I use a phone today. I don’t want to be required to open the clam shell if I don’t want to,” claims Dotsmada44.

“This is about the technology and the best tech firm in existence, Samsung,” says Striptaway.

The excitement is very high on Twitter.

This is when smart really gets smarter. So excited.

Yahoo doesn’t seem to think that the bendable phone will be the Galaxy S8, but a lot of others do. After all, why wouldn’t Samsung make their flagship phone the bendable one? Samsung is going to have to make a huge splash after releasing the very successful Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones in March. As BGR noted, the S7 and, especially, the S7 Edge are more successful than anybody thought they would be.

“For the first time since April last year, Samsung regained the No. 1 spot in the U.S. smartphone market, new research shows. According to a new report from Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research seen by Business Korea , Samsung accounted for 28.8% of the U.S. market for the month of March.”

The article added that Apple dropped to second place with 23 percent of the market and LG took the third spot with 17.1 percent. Know Your Mobile also takes note of Samsung’s latest success and Apple’s relative failure.

“Fortunately, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have sold exceptionally well and are the two biggest Android phones in the mobile space — bar none. Interestingly, in the same period as the Galaxy S7 arrived, Apple posted its first ever decline in iPhone sales. This isn’t quite the doom and gloom many argued for the world’s biggest tech brand, but it is a sign that iPhone adoption and growth has now reached something of a plateau,” claims columnist Paul Briden.

As the article notes, part of the success of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is the fact that the microSD card has returned. The lack of a microSD card slot is something that hurt sales of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, despite the fact that these phones received fantastic reviews. People were also upset that the removable battery feature was removed from the S6 models. However, the S7 models still don’t have a removable battery feature, but consumers don’t seem to care that much anymore.

In any case, it looks like Samsung has overtaken Apple as the most innovative smartphone company, at least judging by the consumer and critical response. Do you think Apple can make a comeback and, once again, topple Samsung in the smartphone industry? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section.
