Is this the next generation of television sets? Sony is hoping that the Ultra-HD 4K TV will rejuvenate the television market when it hits stores in the United States this December.

The Sony Ultra-Hd 4K TV is 84 inches on the diagonal and has four times the resolution as current high-end HDTVs. Sony hasn’t released a price yet but did say that the new TV will hit stores by the end of the year.

The TV got the name “4K” because it has about 4,000 pixels on its horizontal edge. The exact resolution of the set, according to Fox News , is 3,840 by 2,160 pixels. Common “1080p” sets are 1,920 by 1,080 pixels.

The higher pixel count means that the Ultra-Hd 4K TV can show a much bigger picture without losing any quality. Unfortunately, there isn’t too much content right now that can take advantage of the larger screen.

Sony, however, is proud to lead the charge toward a new era in TV watching and is looking forward to making content to take advantage of the 84 inch screen.

Phil Molyneux, chief operating officer of Sony Electronics, said that Sony would bring content to the market just like it did with cassette tapes, CDs, and DVDs.

Molyneux said:

“We always get this question when we launch beautiful new technology: Where’s the content?… Did we bring the content to market? Yes, we did.”

CBC reports that TV sales have slowed in recent years. 3DTVs were supposed to boost sales but only a small percentage of people upgraded their HDTVs. Do you think large screen TVs with high resolution like the Ultra-HD 4K TV will catch on?
