A group of drug smugglers got into the Halloween spirit this week by using pumpkins to transport cocaine.
According to NBC, custom officials at Montreal Airport seized three pumpkins that were stuffed to the brim with cocaine. Officials said that the gourds had nearly four pounds of coaine in them.
The crooks hollowed the pumpkins out and then stuffed them with plastic bags filled with cocaine. The pumpkins were then recapped and put through customs. One of the agents noticed that the pumpkins felt a little heavier than normal and decided to put them through an X-ray.
That’s when officials realized that the pumpkins contained about 2 kilograms of cocaine.
Benoît Chiquette, the CBSA’s Regional Director General for the Quebec Region, said: “Border services officers work tirelessly to intercept narcotics regardless how they are hidden… This seizure helps eradicate narcotics from our community by stopping potential traffickers from using our international airports for their illicit cross-border activities.”
Chiquette added that officials at Montreal-Trudeau Airport have made 173 drug seizures since the beginning of 2013. Ten of those seizures involved cocaine. A total of 44 kilos have been taken by custom officials since the start of the year.
Officers said that the cocaine could have sold from anywhere between $275,000 to $350,000.
