When Google showed off the Google Nexus 7 tablet at the Google I/O developer conference it was immediately clear that the 7-inch tablet with its $199 price tag would compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, now the first “competitive” results are in and according to iFixit the Nexus 7 tablet destroys the Kindle Fire in terms of battery performance.
The Nexus 7 tablet operates with the help of a 4326 mAh, 16 Wh battery that can last 9:49 hours, in comparison the Kindle Fire runs a bigger 4400 mAh battery at 16.28 Wh but lasts just 7:42 hours.
The news is great for Google and it got even better when the tablet was compared to the new iPad’s battery testing which offers a much larger 1500 mAh, 42.5 Wh batter with 9:52 hours for HSPA and 9:37 hours for LTE use. When you consider that the new iPad offers a much bigger battery but also a much bigger display the two devices stand up well next to each other.
It would be interesting to see how the Google Nexus device would stand up to the Apple iPad battery performance if it also featured a super crisp Retina display and cellular radios.
In terms of competing with the Apple iPad the Google Nexus 7 tablet scored a 7 out of 10 on the “repairability” score index, while the new iPad came in with a rather pathetic 2 out of 10 repairability.
With Google offering the Google Nexus 7 as a loss leader its real competition comes from Amazon and the Kindle Fire tablet line, at this point at least it looks like Google is winning that battle.
