Toyota on Tuesday announced that it would bring hybrid technology to the 2013 Avalon, marking the first time that the company’s largest sedan receives its own hybrid variant.
Unlike other hybrid vehicles which practically shout “look at me I’m a hybrid” the recently released photos of the vehicle show very few reminders that the car is eco-friendly, relying on only a few small badges and a slightly blue-tinted lens.
Much like the luxury-based Lexus ES for which the Avalon shares a platform the Avalon Hybrid will offer buyers a 154-horsepower, 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four paired with a duo of electric motors and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack.
Buyers can expect 200 total powertrain horsepower output that runs alongside an EPA fuel economy of 40 miles city and 39 miles highway.
Just like the Lexus ES the 2012 Avalon also features three operation moves that include pure EV, Eco and Sport. The Sport mode tweaks steering weight and throttle response for a different feel.
Unfortunately no pricing has been revealed at this time for the 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid and the company has yet to release dynamic performance figures for the vehicle.
Once it debuts the 2013 Avalon won’t be alone in the space, facing competition from the large-sized Buick LaCrosse eAssist and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.

In comparing the vehicle it stacks up pretty well in terms of MPG for smaller Toyota vehicles including the 2012 Toyota Camry (41 mpg) and the Toyota Camry Hybrid (40 mpg).
For power drivers Toyota’s other Avalon model offers a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.
