Owners of brand new Scion FR-S or Subaru BRZ can rest assured that everything in their car appears to operate as it is supposed to, but they’re technically being recalled anyway. The vehicles airbags work just fine, but early versions of the printed owners manual contain incorrect information on how the front passenger airbag system operates.
As such the vehicles fail to meet stringent federal safety standards, so Subaru is going to provide new printed pages to owners until the company can print new owners manuals. Scion will likely do the same according to the Christian Science Monitor.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims that only 1,156 Scions are affected by the voluntary recall. The New York Times reports that Subaru is recalling 1,886.
The Times reported that auto manufacturers occasionally recall vehicles because of information related to safety, like tire-pressure ratings, or an incorrect label on the vehicle. A recall for an error in the owner’s manual, however, is unusual.
The Christian Science Monitor suggests that since no date has been set for the recall, that owners with questions or concerns contact their dealer for additional information. The Toyota Scion FR-S retails for roughly $25,000. The Subaru BRZ sells for between $26,000 and a little more than $29,000. The rear-wheel-drive FR-S, which is marketed as a Toyota in some markets, was co-developed with the BRZ.
