Starz on Monday announced that it will cancel the show Spartacus after airing the third season run of 10 episodes.

After making the announcement creator Steven S. DeKnight promised that the remaining episodes will be the best yet, noting:

“This season is bigger than anything we’ve attempted. The scope and scale is just amazing. We’re dealing with massive battles between thousands of people. We hope to leave people feel satisfied.”

While some shows are suddenly cut off with sloppy resolutions for its characters DeKnight says he thought for months that the “War of the Damned” season would be the shows last and for that reason he prepared for a strong ending that properly chronicles the leaders journey.

DeKnight tells Entertainment Weekly:

“Looking at the story in the history books, it’s wave after wave of Roman senators going after Spartacus who are defeated until [Roman general Marcus Crassus] comes in. So let’s pick out the most interesting moments in this struggle and lay out a clear narrative for Spartacus and his rebellion. I wanted to lay out a strong forward narrative with a strong antagonist.”

Inspired by the movie 300 the series was a visual and run away hit for Starz when it first debuted as rating actually rose as the show went on, eventually reaching 6 million viewers. However after Spartacus star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma season two was halted and when he passed away newcomer Liam McIntryre took over the role, at which point its success was never quite duplicated.

Will you be glued to your television set for the third and final season of Spartacus?
