Hurry, there are only 13 more hours left for National Donut day. Several bakeries, including Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme, will be giving away free doughnuts today in order to celebrate the circular pastry.
Dunkin’ Donuts wrote on its Facebook page :
“Time to make the donuts for national dunut day! Free donut with purchase of any beverage. Need we say more?”
Krispy Kreme wrote :
“Happy National Doughnut Day! Remember to pick-up your doughnut of choice on us at participating US and Canada locations.”
National Donut Day has a long history in the United States. The holiday, which is always celebrated the first Friday of June, was originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army. National Donut Day was created to honor the donut girls, women who served the treats to soldiers during World War I.
According to the Salvation Army, Evangeline Booth (USA National Commander 1904-1934) created a National War Board during World War 1 in order to meet the needs of soldiers serving overseas. Booth decided to send women to the front line in France in order to make and serve donuts to the homesick soldiers.
