Dallas Cowboys News: Team Makes Trade With Buffalo Bills For Matt Cassel

The Dallas Cowboys have now filled a need that just opened up for them within the last couple of days. When quarterback Tony Romo went down with a broken clavicle, it was time for Brandon Weeden to step in and lead the team for the next two months. Still, the team needed a veteran backup and they went out and got one by making a trade with the Buffalo Bills for Matt Cassel.

NFL reported that the Cowboys traded for Cassel on Tuesday afternoon, and the Bills got a conditional 2017 draft pick that could be as high as a fifth-rounder. It’s also being said that the teams will swap late 2017 draft picks too.

The news of the trade happened just moments after it was revealed that the Cowboys had brought quarterback Kellen Moore to the active roster.

The #Cowboys are bringing up Kellen Moore from the practice squad, source said. They had QBs in for workouts, but will go with Moore.

Josh Johnson and Jason Campbell were both scheduled to come in for workouts, but it appears that won’t end up happening. Free agent quarterbacks Christian Ponder, McLeod Bethel-Thompson, and Matt Flynn had all had workouts for the Cowboys this week since Romo was injured on Sunday.

Matt Cassel has not been able to find his place in the NFL yet, and it appears as if Bufflao didn’t end up being it either. He battled for the starting spot with the Bills, but was beaten out by Tyrod Taylor.

SB Nation reports that not all is lost for Cassel though. Brandon Weeden fizzled out in Cleveland to start and ended up as the backup in Dallas. If he falters while filling in for the injured Tony Romo, then Cassel could get another shot at starting even though his time with Minnesota and Kansas City didn’t work out either.

Tony Romo ‘s injury is only one of the issues that the Dallas Cowboys are dealing with at this time. Wide receiver Dez Bryant has a broken bone in his foot and is out at least another month. Now, tight end Jason Witten is dealing with a number of injuries and his status for this weekend is uncertain.

Matt Cassel is heading to the Dallas Cowboys and he will likely be the immediate backup to Brandon Weeden. That could mean back to the practice squad for Kellen Moore, but a lot could happen before Tony Romo totally heals.
