A girl saved her mother and her baby brother after her mother passed out at the wheel of the family’s SUV. According to Time , 5-year-old Lexi Shymanski is being called a hero after some bravery and quick thinking that ultimately saved the lives of her mother, Angela, and her 10-week-old baby brother, Peter.

Lexi was traveling from Calgary to Prince George with her mother and brother when her mom passed out and lost control of the SUV. The vehicle hit a tree before going down a 40-foot embankment. When the car stopped moving, Lexi noticed that her mom wasn’t conscious, and she knew that Peter was too young to help, so she got herself out of her safety seat, headed back up the embankment, and flagged down drivers on the road — successfully.

The girl who saved her mother and baby brother may have had adrenaline take over, which is what her mom thinks happened. Angela is still shocked that her daughter was able to get out of her seat, out of the car, and up to the roadway to get help.

“It’s crazy. I only can remember one or two times where she got out of her five-point harness previously. She somehow got out, adrenaline or whatever, and barefoot hiked up the embankment,” said Angela. She is obviously so proud of Lexi, and so thankful that her little girl knew exactly what to do in such a scary/dangerous situation.

The girl saved her mother and baby brother’s lives by getting help, as both were severely injured and could have died if they didn’t receive medical attention. According to WetPaint , both Angela and Peter were air-lifted to the hospital , where they were treated for their injuries. Peter suffered swelling and bleeding around his brain and needed surgery. While traumatic to say the least, he (now 4-months-old) is recovering.

Meanwhile, Angela has multiple injuries that she is still recovering from.

“Angela suffered the brunt of the physical trauma. The mom-of-two, who was resuscitated twice between the crash and her Alberta hospital arrival, had multiple fractures and broken ribs along with internal bleeding. Now she’s using a wheelchair to get around and is dealing with nerve damage in her leg,” reports WetPaint .

As previously reported by the Inquisitr , it is unclear why Angela Shymanski passed out while driving. While she is in a great deal of discomfort, she is expected to be okay. Lexi suffered only minor injuries, but her mom said that she is having nightmares now, weeks after the crash.
