You’ve probably noticed that semicolons have started to appear across your Twitter and Facebook pages over the last few days. But why have dozens of individuals have been getting the piece of punctuation etched onto their skin? Well, in fact, it’s really touching, and rather than being a passing fad, there is a beautiful reason for the viral campaign.
The Semicolon Project has been devised to help individuals who self-harm across the world. According to the initiative’s official website it is “for everyone who self-harms , is suicidal , depressed, has anxiety, is unhappy, going through a broken heart, or just lost a loved one.”
To help them get through this pain, they want people to “draw a semicolon on your wrist.” And they have a rather ingenious reasons for why they want people to do that, too. Their official website explains as follows.
“A semicolon represents a sentence the author could have ended, but chose not to. That author is you and the sentence is your life.”
This campaign has provoked a strong response from people who do suffer from these symptoms, and the Internet soon became awash with individuals looking to endorse and join The Semicolon Project.
