Tesla To Deliver Model X: ‘Three To Four Months’ [Video]

If you’re one of the 20,000 people who’ve ordered a Tesla Model X – the electric car manufacturer’s answer to SUVs – you won’t have to wait much longer. Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, told buyers the cars will start rolling off the line as early as this September. Tesla has been taking orders for the Model X since 2012.

At Tesla’s annual meeting on June 9, Musk said the “long awaited” SUV will start being delivered in “three to four months,” CNN reports.

What’s taking so long? Well, probably the falcon-wing doors for one. There’s been some hints that Tesla has struggled with design. But Musk suggested at the annual meeting that there might be some surprises in store for new Tesla Model X owners.

“We want to make sure obviously that some of the key features of the Model X , particularly the falcon-wing door, and the way that the second row seats are done, and a few other things that people aren’t aware of, are done just right,” he said, according to CNN . “Getting those final nuances right for the Model X is what we’re focused on right now.”

The Model X was first slated to begin deliveries in 2014, and Tesla started taking orders back in 2012, but problems, suspected to be related to the falcon doors, kept pushing the release date back. There’s no information about the price of the Model X.

The futuristic Model X will soon remind drivers of cars out of The Jetsons . Musk promises the Model X will soon have the capacity to drive itself, which includes parking on its own after the driver exits, as well as driving from its parking space to meet the driver and passengers. The self-driving feature reportedly will be ready for beta tests with some drivers as soon as the end of this month.

Based on criticism surrounding the PowerWall, Tesla has upgraded that feature. The PowerWall is a lithium battery pack, and it will be significantly stronger than previously planned at no additional cost to the buyer. Initially, the battery would provide two kilowatts of power on a steady basis and surge to 3.3 kilowatts. Based on feedback, Tesla upgraded the battery, which will now boast five kilowatts of power and surge to seven kilowatts.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr , Tesla recently acquired Grand Rapids-based auto-supplier, Riviera Tool, to begin increasing production on its vehicles. Owning the auto supplier means Tesla has parts readily available and gives the company a stronghold in the United States.

Right now, however, Tesla is focusing on “getting those final nuances right for the Model X” reports Auto Blog .
