If you’re wondering what French Open Champion Stan Wawrinka’s tattoo says, you’re not the only one. The new tennis sensation is a bit unconventional and has blossomed at a later age than most, but what does the inscription on his arm read?

Stan Wawrinka’s tattoo has been the topic of some discussion on social media not surprisingly as these sort of things usually happen. This is what the new French Open Champion chose to ink on the inside of his left arm, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.” The words are from Samuel Beckett and he spoke about it in 2014.

“I only did the tattoo last year, but I first saw the quote a long time ago. It always stayed in my mind. It’s how I see life and tennis. The meaning of the quote doesn’t change no matter how well you do. There is always disappointment, heartache. You are losing almost every tournament. You need to just accept it and be positive because you are going to lose and fail.”

But Stan Wawrinka has another tattoo on his right arm, the name of his daughter, Alexia. The French Open Champion and his wife, Ilham Vuilloud, separated earlier this year due to the demands of his career, which he explained in more detail on a Facebook post.

Tennis is not a sport which most would associate with tattoos, however according to Foot Soldiers of Tennis , Stan Wawrinka is not the only one who has one, he just chooses to let it be visible to everyone.

The website claims that the quote is a popular one in the tennis world and serves as inspiration to keep going to many of the top players in the world. Some, allegedly have the same inscription in places that are not exposed.

At the tender age of 30, Stan Wawrinka has seen a renewal in his career and as he enjoys the fruits of his hard labor we may hear why a top tennis player chose to put a tattoo on his arm. For now, the world focuses on the Swiss player’s incredible feat of defeating top seed Novak Djokovis in the 2015 French Open final.
