David Burtka was a guest on the Wendy Williams show on Thursday. During their chat , Burtka talked about his and Neil Patrick’s Harris’ four-year-old twins. When Wendy asked him how the twins could have his DNA and Neil’s DNA, he explained how that happened.
David said two different women were involved. One was an anonymous egg donor that the two men found by looking at people’s profiles. His sperm and Neil’s sperm were placed inside her in two different eggs. Both of the eggs became fertilized. Then the fertilized eggs were planted into a surrogate who had helped another same-sex couple. The surrogate carried the babies to term. She gave birth to David and Neil’s fraternal twins on October 12, 2010.

The Daily Mail reported that Neil explained the procedure to Barbara Walters last year when he was interviewed as one of the “10 Most Fascinating People of 2104.”
“We inserted one of my sperm and one of David’s sperm into two eggs with the hope that they would both take, just because we both wanted to be dads biologically. Both took, miraculously.”
When the twins were born, Neil said he didn’t want to know which one was his biological child because he loves both of them implicitly.
Even though the men don’t know which twin is their biological child, David said the answer might be in their personality now that they are getting older. David, 39, believes Harper Grace is his biological child because of the way she acts. She is more outgoing than Gideon Scott, who is a little more heady and intellectual like Neil, 41.
Despite having no need to know the genetic father of each of the children, Neil admitted during his interview with Walters that he also has suspicions based on the children’s behavior.
Their personalities are not only distinct from each other’s, but probably from most preschoolers, based on their eating habits.
“Gideon eats everything you put in front of him. His passion for cooking and eating good food is in his soul. He loves clams, sushi, octopus, grilled pork, steak, parmigiana cheese, ginger, mint, cinnamon and coconut. As for Harper, she likes briny flavors and particularly enjoys oysters, sardines, prosciutto, capers, duck liver, miso, and anything chocolate.”
David said he is more maternal, and Neil is the disciplinarian and a stern taskmaster. The children call him “Daddy,” and they call Neil “Poppa.” The couple decided it would be too confusing for Harper and Gideon to have two dads, and neither wanted to be called Mom.
