The new Ford Focus Electric has been certified as America’s most fuel-efficient five-passenger vehicle by the Environmental Protection Agency, Ford said over the weekend.

The Ford Focus Electric boasts a very impressive combined 105 MPG rating. Specifically, Ford said that the Ford Focus Electric was rated for 110 MPG on the highway, and an even more impressive 99 miles per gallon in city driving conditions, which puts the Focus Electric well ahead of Nissan’s most fuel-efficient all-electric car, the Leaf.

Ford says that the range of the Focus Electric is 76 miles on a full charge, which narrowly comes out on top against the Nissan Leaf, which is rated for 73 miles on a single charge. The EPA-approved label will say that the Ford Focus Electric could save motorists up to $9,700 over the course of five years compared with the average new vehicle.

The Ford Focus Electric is set to join the 2013 Ford Fusion, which the company aims to make the most feul-efficient gas-and-hybrid-powered midsized sedan in America. Additionally, the Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is projected by the company to be the world’s most fuel-efficient midsize sedan, achieving 100 MPGe in electric mode.

“Ford is giving customers the power of choice for leading fuel economy regardless of what type of vehicle or powertrain technology they choose,” said Eric Kuehn, chief nameplate engineer, Focus Electric. “The Focus and Fusion are great examples of how we transformed our fleet of cars, utilities and trucks with leading fuel efficiency.”
