Sports Illustrated is reporting that former Detroit Lion and NFL Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders has filed for divorce from his wife of 11 years, TV news anchor Lauren Campbell-Sanders .
According to paperwork filed Friday in Michigan’s Oakland County Court, Sanders, 43, cites a breakdown in marital relations as the reason for the divorce.
The couple, who married in November 2000, have three boys – ages 10, 8, and 4 – together.
The Detroit Free Press writes that Barry is seeking joint custody of the children until they are 18 years of age, but is asking the court to make his wife responsible for all health insurance and health care costs.
Sanders added in the divorce filing that he intends to provide child support in accordance with state guidelines.
Over the course of his 10-year career Barry Sanders, a Heisman Trophy winner and 10-time Pro Bowl selection, rushed for 15,269 yards, and sits third on the all-time list behind Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton.
Barry Sanders – the first NFL player to rush for more than 1,000 years in each season he played – retired in 1999 and entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004. His No. 20 has been retired by the Lions.
