I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when the Pope signed up for a Twitter account but given the Church’s archaic viewpoints on most things the idea of the Roman Catholic Church being on Twitter was something that I hadn’t been expected.
Now as we head in Lent it seems that the Pontifical Council for Social Communications decided that it might be a good idea to reach out to all those lapsed Catholics and non-believers. It is also their hope that the Pope can use Twitter to reach the youth of the world and provide some guidance over the religious holiday.
To do this the Pope will be tweeting one gospel theme or message each day of the 40 day celebration of Lent.
While we might think that being able to condense a religious thought or message into a 140 characters might be hard to do Msgr Paul Tighe, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, believes that the Pope’s messages can indeed be condensed into a limited number of characters.
“Many of the key Gospel ideas are readily rendered in just 140 characters. This is not the only way the Church speaks but it’s an avenue that is open to us and it’s pithy, succinct and it’s one I think that we’re quite good at.”
