There’s been quite a bit of talk recently that Apple’s iPad 3 would have a Retina display capable of producing visuals that handily surpass that of the iPad 1 or 2, and now further evidence has surfaced that backs up all of that talk.
MacRumors reported Friday that the site managed to get their hands on an iPad 3 display. While it may look a whole lot like the iPad 2 display, the site took it under a microscope and discovered that the resolution appears to have increased quite a bit–more specifically, the iPad 3’s resolution is double the linear resolution of the iPad 2.
MacRumors reports:
Since we only had a raw iPad 3 display with no method to power it, taking high quality photos of the pixels was difficult. Still, even with the relatively poor lighting, you can easily make out the pixels on each display (made up of red, green and blue elements). We highlighted [see below] a cluster of 4 pixels (2×2) from the iPad 2 to compare it to the same area on the iPad 3. On the iPad 3, the same cluster was occupied by 16 pixels (4×4) — exactly twice the resolution in each direction.
Rumor has it that Apple will be unveiling the iPad 3 for the first time during the first week of March, so it’s possible we won’t have to wait much longer to find out for sure.
