Sinead O’Connor is leaving the track which she is internationally known for-in addition to her sharp tongue and “tempestuous” manner- off her performance piece list due to not being able to emotionally identify with “Nothing Compares 2 U” at this point in her life.
As ABC News reported , “The famed Irish singer, 48, [shared] that if she were to sing the song just for the fans,” she wouldn’t be doing her job right.
On Saturday, as E! notes, the singer of the 1990’s smash hit posted her intentions to Facebook.
“OK, the time has come for me to cease singing Nothing Compares 2U. The first principle of the manner in which I’m trained as a singer (Bel Canto) is we never sing a song we don’t emotionally identify with. After twenty-five years of singing it, nine months or so ago I finally ran out of anything I could use in order to bring some emotion to it.”
Naturally, the response from Facebook followers was immense. Many fans demonstrated their support while others felt that the singer should consider the view that although O’Connor may not have an emotional reaction or connection with the song, her fans still do.
Fans like Denise Poole Oatneal, who has an especially strong connection with the song, was honest in her posting to Facebook, writing, “I want you to know how special NC2U is to me. My mom introduced this song to me and she just passed away about a year and a half ago. We both love(d) you.”
The second single off O’Connor’s album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got is without doubt her most popular song and as mentioned is known internationally. “Nothing Compares 2 U” was written by pop star legend Prince and earned an award for the associated video by MTV at the VMA’s back in 1990.
Staying true to her straight-shooting and honest way, O’Connor continued to explain her reasoning for her decision from a moralistic standpoint via the social media site.
“I don’t want audiences to be disappointed coming along to a show and then not hearing it, so am letting you know here that you won’t. If I were to sing it just to please people, I wouldn’t be doing my job right, because my job is to be emotionally available. I’d be lying. You’d be getting a lie. My job is to give you honesty. I’m trained in honesty. I can’t act. It just isn’t in my training. I have ceased singing other songs over the years for the same reason.”
Although many fans were disappointed with Sinead’s decision, a large number were in full support of the decision and gave the veteran pop star full respect for staying true to herself. As Peter O’Connor posted “To thine own self be true.”
